Why holding companies, why now
July 12, 2026 · FortisPrime Leadership
The holding company is an old structure. In technology, it has been treated as a relic for most of the last decade.
We think it is more relevant than it has been in years.
The case for a parent platform
Operating companies benefit from a clear, narrow focus. The parent — when it works — provides something the operating company cannot easily build for itself: long-horizon capital, cross-company research, governance, and a place where strategic decisions can be made deliberately rather than cyclically.
When the parent does its job well, the operating companies become more focused, not less. When it does not, it becomes a tax.
The mistake most holding companies make
Most holding companies do not do their job well. They centralize decisions that should belong to the operating business, or they fail to invest in the shared capabilities that justify the structure in the first place.
We are building FortisPrime to do the opposite: keep decision rights where the operating knowledge lives, and invest in the things — research, governance, patient capital — that are best built once and shared.
